A WhatsApp MCP server you run yourself, on your own number
whatzmcp will be a free, open source WhatsApp MCP server you run on your own machine, so Claude or another AI agent can read and answer WhatsApp from the number you already use. It is for people who already run an MCP agent. The repo is not public yet. A hosted version on mcp.whatzmcp.com is planned, no price set.
The server, the WhatsApp session and anything it stores will stay on your machine. It never talks to our servers.
One mail on launch day with the repo link. The code is not out yet, so there is nothing to install today.
Built for agents that speak MCP
MCP is the standard way AI agents plug into outside tools. whatzmcp is a WhatsApp MCP server, so it is meant for that kind of agent.
- Claude Code
- Cursor
- Codex
Think Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, or any other client that can add an MCP server. We will not call a client supported until we have tested it. The list of agents that work, with the setup for each, goes into the README on the day the repo is published. Until then, read those names as the kind of agent this is for, not a promise.
How setup will work
Three steps, done once, all on your own machine. No account with us, no key from us.
# install commands: not published yet # step 3, once whatzmcp runs and your number is linked > From now on you answer the WhatsApp on workshop days. The notes say which bikes are ready for pickup. Custom builds and their prices go to me first, not to the customer. Understood. Waiting for new messages. Friday 09:58
Install commands appear here when the repo is live. We will not show commands for code you cannot download yet.
Run whatzmcp and add it to your agent
You get the code from the public repo, start it on your machine and point your agent at it, the same way you add any other MCP server. The lines to paste go into the README.
Link the number you already use
The plan is that it links the way WhatsApp Web links a browser, as a linked device, so you keep your own number. On your phone that is WhatsApp, Linked devices (under Settings on iPhone, the three dots menu on Android), Link a device, then scan. The README will confirm the exact steps.
Tell your agent what to do, in plain words
Ask it to read today's chats, draft a reply to a customer, or answer someone who just wrote to you. Your agent decides what to say. The server only sends and receives.
What a WhatsApp MCP server does for your agent
It is the bridge between your agent and your WhatsApp. The thinking stays with the agent you already use.
Read this before you link a number
Running it yourself costs nothing, but your WhatsApp number is the thing at risk. This is how to keep it safe.
The repo is not public yet
The server is still being built. When it is published, you get the link.
Leave your email and you get one mail on the day the repo goes public, with the link and the setup steps. If you would rather not run it yourself, a hosted version on mcp.whatzmcp.com is planned. It is not live and has no price yet, so we are not taking signups for it.
No invite, no queue. When it is published, anyone can run it.
The repo is public. The link and the setup steps are below.
You decide how far it goes
Because it runs on your machine, every off switch is yours.
What people ask about a WhatsApp MCP
The questions people search before they link a number, answered in a line or two. The same list feeds the FAQ data on this page.
What is a WhatsApp MCP server?
It is a small program that lets an AI agent such as Claude use WhatsApp as a tool, through MCP, the standard agents use to plug into outside tools. The agent decides what to say and the server sends and receives the messages. whatzmcp will be an open source one you run on your own machine. The repo is not published yet.
How do I connect Claude to my WhatsApp?
You run a WhatsApp MCP server, add it to Claude the way you add any MCP server, and link your number from your phone under Linked devices. For whatzmcp, the exact steps and commands go into the README on the day the repo is published. Leave your email on this page to get the link.
Is there an open source, self hosted WhatsApp MCP server that works with my own number?
That is what whatzmcp is being built as: open source, run on your own machine, linked to the number you already use. It will be free to run yourself once the repo is public. It is not out yet, so we are not claiming it works today.
Does my WhatsApp data leave my machine?
Not to us. whatzmcp runs the MCP server, the WhatsApp session and any storage on your own machine, and it never talks to our servers. Your agent still sees the messages you let it read, so check where your agent itself sends data.
Will my WhatsApp number get banned if an AI agent uses it?
It can, if the number is used for unsolicited messages. This is not the official WhatsApp Business API, and WhatsApp can disconnect or ban numbers that message strangers. Brand new numbers that start chats with strangers are the first ones banned. Link a number people already message, and only answer people who wrote to you.
Does it work with Cursor or Codex?
They speak MCP, which is what whatzmcp is built for. We will only list a client as working after we have tested it, and that list goes into the README when the repo is published.
Can I run it in Docker?
Not decided yet. How to run it, Docker included, will be in the README when the repo is published.
Is the most popular WhatsApp MCP repo still maintained?
Check the last commit date and the open issues on GitHub before you link your number to any repo, ours included. whatzmcp is not published yet, so there is nothing to compare today. When it ships, its commit history is public too.
WhatsApp MCP vs the WhatsApp Business API: which do I need?
A WhatsApp MCP server like whatzmcp links your own number as a linked device so your agent can answer people who write to you. It is unofficial and has no templates and no green tick. If you need templates, a verified business profile or to message people first at scale, you need the official WhatsApp Business API, which is a different product.
Is there a hosted WhatsApp MCP if I do not want to run it myself?
A hosted version on mcp.whatzmcp.com is planned as the paid alternative to running it yourself. It is not live and has no price yet.
